Written in 1953, this is one of Rautavaara’s early works in which the rhythms and melodies of Finnish folk music, especially the Otrobothnian style, have left a strong print. In this respect the work is a close relative of Rautavaara’s popular work The Fiddlers. The themes and motives of the various movements are closely related, and aeolian and mixolydian modes lend the piece an archaic and rustic air.
