Is there anyone who never dreamed of a wonderful voyage across the ocean? Of distant harbours, sunbronzed girls, white caps on the waves of the deep blue sea and of the infinite expanse to the distant horizon. And still for today’s cruise passengers it is
the most romantic of all dreams – and the songs of the sea sound their eternal strains. Over two hundred of them can be heard on these 10 CDs, associated with such great names as Freddy Quinn and Heidi Kabel, Jonny Hill, Hildegard Knef, René and Dorthe Kollo, Lolita, Lale Andersen, Margot Eskens and – of course – Hans Albers too. In addition many others including the Original Marinechor from Bremerhaven and the Marine Musikkorps (navy music corps) from the North sea and the Baltic. Also there are various real shanty choirs from abroad who provide an idea of how once it must have sounded when sailing ships ran before the wind. These shanties, songs intended to help alleviate the hard work on board ship in olden days, stand alongside romantic songs about love affairs ashore, about longing for far-away places, or for returning home. All go to make up the myth of the unfathomable oceans; overwhelming whether we are standing on the panorama deck of a floating cruise hotel or sailing under billowing canvas.
