The roots of progressive rock lie in England of the 1960’s. With The Beatles opening new vistas with their monumental Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band the musical audience of the age of Aquarius became interested in symphonic and electronic elements and new musical sounds that were infiltrating the airwaves and phonographs of the day.
The scope of prog rock is vast, reaching all the way from the delicate sounds of the Canterbury psychedelic folk scene to the violent electronic bursts of sound coming from the French and Swiss Zeuhl underground. Some of the cornerstones of the prog scene include Pink Floyd, King Crimson, ELP, Yes, Gentle Giant and Genesis. You will find these bands well represented in our selection as well.
The appeal of progressive rock is widespread and each corner of the world has it’s own peculiar take on the genre. Finnish prog has also received accolades from around the world with it’s personal sound which quite often draws from both Finnish mythology and folk music. Some of the leading exponents of Finnish prog include: Wigwam, Pekka Pohjola, Tasavallan Presidentti, Piirpauke and Kingston Wall.
